Brother William Brumlic felt that someone may be

trying to tell us that it is time for major changes for

the Shawano Masons. The Shawano Lodge has been

in this building for many, many years but few people today

know it is here or what it is about. We must go back to

the beginning of the City when Masonry was the corner

stone of the new Shawano and we should think about

bringing back the Masonic Fraternity into this day and age.

I feel that we are in the midst of a big change in the entire

country and Masonry is going to be a big part of it.

It is up to all of us to again become the corner stone in the

City and find a more suitable location to continue our work.

Worshipful Master Mitchell appointed two
committees to investigate potential Lodge housing
that will give our handicapped Brothers the
opportunity to attend and participate in activities
at the Lodge Building.

The Committee that is concerned with selling
the building will be investigating renting a
building,buying a building or construction
of a new building.
The committee that is concerned with keeping
our present building and location will investigate
all options available for rental of space that is
not needed by the Lodge and moving the Lodge
to a ground floor level.

W.M. Mitchell set guidelines and does expect the
committees to keep him informed of their progress.
The Lodge will then have the best options available
so the membership may determine the proper course
of action for the direction of future generations.

Brother Galen Winter resigned from the committee

Dear Grand Master Campbell

As you are aware,Shawano Lodge #170 has embarked

on looking at a new facility. One that will provide

us handicapped accessibility at ground level,

making it easier for all to attend Lodge and

Eastern Star functions,as well as a facility that

will provide rental income that will sustain us

well into the future.

Committee members consisting of Bro’s; Chuck Anderson, Clayton McHugh, and Jim Campbell as well as trustee Danford Jesse, most recent Past Master Rusty Mitchell and Master of Shawano Lodge, Tim Tainter, met this morning to lay out plans to pursue the purchase of this facility. We have placed in earnest money, and currently have an accepted offer to purchase a building and 1.5 acres of land at 2324 East Richmond Street, Shawano with the following contingencies:

Approval from the Grand lodge

Majority Approval from Shawano Lodge 170 Membership

We are not seeking membership approval until the Grand lodge is satisfied that we can proceed with this venture. Therefore, it is the hopes of this committee that the Grand Lodge takes into consideration the following facts:

Due to the aging of the Brethren of Shawano Lodge it is next to impossible for some Brethren to navigate the several flights of stairs to attend Lodge meetings or related functions. A member of our committee fits that very description. We need to acquire a building to fit the needs of all Brethren, not just those who are still able to climb the stairs.

The present Lodge building is aging almost faster than the above-mentioned Brethren. To continue Shawano Lodge meetings at it’s present location would take an expenditure of no less than $50,000 to cover costs of a new roof and major mortar tuck pointing that needs to be done. This would not include expenses required to move the Lodge to the lower level, or expenses to convert the upstairs to useable rental property. It also does not cover costs to replace aging heating and cooling units. Expenditures of this magnitude, in an old building are NOT in the best interest of Masonry and the Brethren of Shawano Lodge.

The Richmond Street property has at its disposal over 3000 square feet that can be easily converted to offices or any type of retail business. If left alone, it could be used for storage of boats snowmobiles small campers etc., as there are 2 overhead doors that would allow access of such equipment. Invitations have been made to our present renters to come with us and utilize the rental space we will have available, and those rental figures have been reflected in our budget.

Exposure and traffic of said rental property has to be considered as well. This location is less than ½ mile from Wal-Mart and Good Will and is located on a major thoroughfare into and out of the Industrial Park. Traffic is heavy in this area as people use it to by-pass downtown and stop lights etc… It offers very nice frontal exposure with present availability for large lighted signage and parking. With the 1.5 acres of available land, it also provides room for future expansion if desired, or for larger parking areas.

The Trustees and Committee to Move to a New Location, heartily recommends the sale of our present Lodge building and the purchase of the property at 2324 E. Richmond Street Shawano. The committee also wishes to work in concert with the Grand Lodge to insure this project is completed with the best interest of Masonry and the Brethren of Shawano lodge 170 foremost in mind.

A committee has already been established called the “Fund Raising Committee” and donations are currently being sought for this venture from Lodge membership and Eastern Star members. We currently stand at $5500 raised for this project. This is not the first time Shawano Lodge has moved to a new location. History shows that our present location on Main Street is actually our fourth location. As demographics change and needs of our membership change, we must consider all of these and act wisely. Pouring money into an aging building (half is over 100 years old) and located on a dying Main Street is not a good place to be spending the Lodge money.

We are excited about the possibility of moving to a ground floor facility and providing a very nice Lodge home for years to come. I have enclosed our proposed budget to include this facility along with proposed construction / renovation costs. We ask that the Grand Lodge look favorably upon our request and allow us to move forward with this venture.
Fraternally,

James R. Campbell

W. Bro. Jim,
Thank you for your fine attention to detail in this new building venture.
I appreciated seeing the blueprint plans for your renovation as well as
the budgetary plans during this transition.
It all meets with my approval and I wish you the very best as you go
through the move.
I look forward to attending a meeting once the renovations have been done and you are all moved in.
On a different question – will we as a corps of Grand Lodge officers need to pencil in a date for a cornerstone ceremony and dedication? If so, please review the code regarding cornerstones.

Thanks!
Craig S. Campbell
Grand Master

Dear Members of Shawano Lodge #170, December 30, 2010

As you may recall, a ballot was taken this past fall and the overwhelming vote from the Brethren was to look into the possibility of moving to a “newer” facility. A committee was formed to locate that “newer” facility that might possibly become the new home of Shawano Lodge #170. With instruction from the Grand Master that no new facility would be approved unless some type of rental income could be generated from the facility to off-set any mortgage expenses, the committee set out to locate a “new” Lodge home. Many properties were looked at with one standing out from the rest, and able to meet the requirements of the Grand Master.

The committee has located a ground floor facility on 1.5 acres of land at 2324 E. Richmond Street. This is just inside the industrial park in Shawano. It is handicapped accessible, at ground level, making it easier for all to attend Lodge and Eastern Star functions. Moreover, it is a facility that will provide space for rental income that will satisfy the Grand Master, and sustain us well into the future.

With approval from the Grand Master, the committee has placed in earnest money, $5000 and currently has an accepted offer to purchase this property for $118,000 with the following contingencies:

Approval from the Grand Master

Majority Approval from Shawano Lodge 170 Membership

With approval from the Grand Master being satisfied, we can proceed with this venture. Therefore, it is the hopes of this committee that the Membership takes into consideration the following facts:

This letter will officially serve as a 30 day notice to all Brethren that a vote by ballot will be taken to move forward with the purchase of the aforementioned property.
